Making an Oscar of the Noscar

Acknowledging excellence in occupational SHEQ, this year’s National Occupational Safety Association’s NOSCAR award ceremony was an extravaganza that could give the Hollywood production a run… without the soppy speeches thankfully

The National Occupational Safety Association (NOSA) is a company that knows how to put on a show. This year’s NOSCAR award ceremony – held on 13 May at Montecasino in Johannesburg – was the 42nd, and it also happened to coincide with NOSA’s 60th anniversary.

So, all were in for a treat. As the lights went down and the music started, the singer and her entourage of back-up dancers set the tone for the remainder of the evening. This was to be more than a staid award ceremony; it was a celebration. Not only of NOSA’s 60 years, but also for the excellence achieved by all 92 NOSCAR recipients.
“NOSCAR companies represent only 6% of all companies on the NOSA system and it is an achievement that one should be very proud of,” says Duncan Carlisle, group managing director of MICROmega Holdings (NOSA is a MICROmega company). “To quote Michael Phelps who has won 14 Olympic gold medals: ‘My goal was one Olympic gold medal. Not many people in this world can say, I’m an Olympic gold medalist.’ And similarly not many companies can say they are a NOSCAR,” he continues.
Two categories of awards were presented on the night; the Green award on the NOSA Five Star System for health and safety, and the Platinum award on the NOSA Integrated Five Star System for health, safety and environment. Encouragingly, the majority of winners were Platinum recipients. Even more impressive is that, while there were plenty first-time and recurring recipients on the evening, some companies were receiving their 15th NOSCAR.
Notable among the winners were South African Breweries Limited (SAB), whose various depots accounted for 37 of the awards – all of them multiple-time Platinum awards. Highest among them was the SAB Springfield Depot earning its 15th Platinum award, followed by the SAB Alrode Depot and the SAB Maltings Caledon, each earning their 12th Platinum NOSCAR
Some other notable award winners were Eskom Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, Eskom Nuclear Division – 13th Platinum award; Eskom Peaking Portfolio, Drankensberg Pump Storage Scheme – 12th Platinum award; Transnet Rail Engineering, Wagon Maintenance, Vandyksdrif – 12th Platinum award; and Island View Storage, Richards Bay – 12th Platinum award.
Unfortunately there is not enough space to give all the winners a mention here, but, whether it was a company’s first or 15th NOSCAR being awarded, each is as important an achievement as the next. Eligible companies must score 95% or more measured during a NOSA Grading Audit; record a Disabling Incident Frequency Rating of less than 0,8; and must be a winner of any of the categories in the NOSA regional competitions. However, if a company slips below the required criteria, the NOSCAR is forfeited and it can take three years or more to regain NOSCAR eligibility and status. It’s this fact that causes the winners to keep striving to maintain their high standards.
The evening was a fitting tribute to NOSA and all 2011 NOSCAR winners. “Here’s looking forward to the next 60 years of NOSA providing the same level of expertise in SHEQ management solutions, and to the amazing dedication and rising standards of all the present and future winners,” concluded Carlisle.
