Chinese premier stresses safety and quality at nuclear plant

Li Keqiang, premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, stressed the importance of quality and safety in China’s first nuclear power project demonstration on Friday.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, a 340-t hemispherical dome was installed at China National Nuclear Corporation’s Fuqing nuclear power plant in the Fujian province on Thursday.
The plant uses Hualong One technology, a domestically developed third-generation reactor design.
In a press release on Friday, Keqiang congratulated designers and construction workers on the successful installation of the project’s containment dome.
He stated that the project should start operating on schedule under the precondition that quality and safety is ensured.
“Absolute safety must be guaranteed in nuclear power construction, operation and management,” he said.
The purpose of the dome is to provide protection against nuclear accidents.
The installation marks the completion of the construction stage of the pilot project and the beginning of the assembly stage.
Keqiang called it a “landmark project” under the “Made in China 2025” plan, which is aimed at transforming China from a manufacturing giant into a world manufacturing power.
