Be an OHS hero

With the aim of improving visitor experience at A-OSH Expo – Africa’s largest occupational health and safety (OHS) exhibition – the show organiser, Specialised Exhibitions, has partnered with TrainingTech (a Building Brands company) to provide a one-and-a-half day first-aid training session and a half-day OHS Act familiarisation training session.

The courses form part of a strategic plan to increase the experience value for A-OSH Expo visitors, says Riandi Appelgryn, marketing director at TrainingTech. Presented by a certified national trainer, they have been designed to provide condensed and relevant information in easy-to-digest content.

The first-aid training course runs from 08:00 to 16:00 on Tuesday May 30, and from 08:00 to 12:00 on May 31 at Gallagher Convention Centre outside Johannesburg. Targeted at all OHS employees, this course provides comprehensive coverage of the following elements:

  • Emergency scene management
  • Primary survey
  • Secondary survey
  • SAMPLE history
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • First-aid procedures
  • CPR
  • Abdominal Thrust
  • Recovery Position

From 13:00 to 17:00 on Wednesday 31, TrainingTech will present a session entitled, “What is the function of the Occupational Health and Safety Act?” Appelgryn explains that this course centres on the requirements of adequate health and safety provision for employees in terms of the use of plant and machinery; the protection of visitors and other third parties at work against hazards to health and safety arising out of, or in connection with, the activities of persons at work; to establish an advisory council for occupational health and safety; and to provide for associated matters.

The course content has been created to provide risk and OHS managers with a solid grounding in the application of the Act. The course will cover the following:

  • What are “health and safety representatives”?
  • Functions of health and safety representatives.
  • What may and should a health and safety representative do?
  • What is a health and safety committee?
  • What are the functions of a health and safety committee?
  • What are the employer and employee duties?

“These courses are the ideal complement to A-OSH EXPO and will provide our visitors with further value-added benefits. All attendees will receive a certificate of accreditation and a training manual that contains the training slides and other useful information relating to the topics,” says Joshua Low, A-OSH EXPO event director at Specialised Exhibitions.
